International Creative Bureaucracy Festival Workshop - Better Decisions for Thriving Places

Today we hosted a digital workshop as part of the international Creative Bureaucracy festival on how people working in public systems can make better decisions in complex environments.

Participants joined from several countries mainly across west, central and eastern Europe. We explored how compassion, courage and structured thinking can come together to help navigate the realities of public service and community leadership.

At one point I shared a personal reflection — that I’m learning to be content living in what I call the “uncomfortable middle”: holding compassion and action together while working for outcomes that serve society.

As I said that, a number of participants started sending love hearts in the chat. It was a small but meaningful moment that reminded me how much people are longing for leadership that combines humanity with practical action.

We also discussed the place-based work happening in Newlands, Wellington, as an example of how these ideas can be applied in a real community context.

I’ve offered to send participants an infographic capturing the key themes and courageous steps that emerged across the sessions.

Encouraging to see practitioners from different countries engaging with the idea that better decisions can lead to better outcomes for communities.
